Marshall-Wythe Law School North Wing
College of William & Mary
Williamsburg, Virginia
|
Ballou Justice Upton Architects designed
a 22,000 square foot addition to the north side of Marshall-Wythe Law School
to accommodate classrooms, a Legal Skills Center, Faculty Offices, Seminar
Rooms, Office of Career Planning & Placement, the Commonwealth Attorneys
Council, Alumni Affairs and Colloquium Room. Reconfiguration of
the existing interior spaces adjacent to the new addition is also
included.
The additions design compliments the surrounding
architecture and the building is sited to sensitively respond to
circulation, service issues and student flow. The building
creates a circular path for ease of access for faculty and
students. By pulling the addition away from the existing building, a courtyard was created
and existing offices were able to maintain their exterior windows.
Rotunda
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, Virginia

Ballou Justice Upton Architects
completed the restoration of Thomas Jeffersons Rotunda as closely
as possible to its original appearance, and adapted it to serve as a
functional part of the University. A fire gutted the Rotunda in 1895,
and the reconstruction by the architect at that time deviated greatly
from the original design. Consequently, the job of determining
what was original and what had been changed after 1895 was quite
complicated. Fortunately, Jefferson left a complete set of
drawings and specifications that helped us to reconstruct the
original details.
Certain compromises to make the building functional had to be
made. Floors that were originally of wood joists and flooring,
now consist of steel beams and joists with a metal deck and
concrete topping. Wood flooring, obtained from old Virginia
buildings being demolished, has been laid on top of the concrete
to give the original appearance. Column capitals, cornices and
ornate details incorporated into cornices were originally carved
of wood, but were recreated in cast plaster.
With a metal lath and plaster ceiling system below the
steel-and-concrete structural floors, the complete assembly has
the fire rating necessary for occupancy. The use of plaster
instead of wood reduces the amount of combustible material in the
construction, reduces costs and yet appears the same as the
original work.
Air conditioning, lighting and a sprinkler system were added to
the building but were concealed as much as possible. Other
necessities, such as toilets and control boxes, are hidden away
in closets, so as to minimize the signs of modernization. A shaft
that once held clockweights now contains an elevator, providing
handicapped accessiblity. Specially built,
the elevator is round, with curved doors, and it is operated
hydraulically, with a shaft drilled into the ground below to save
the 150-year-old Rotunda walls from the weight of conventional
elevator works.
