February, 2001
Ballou Justice Upton Architects was recognized for architectural excellence for the renovation and addition of
Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield, Virginia. The project received the award during the
Virginia Educational Facility Planners 2001 Annual Conference. The jury comments, "Ballou Justice Upton
Architects took a rambling plan and tied it together in a logical manner. The architect has given this old school
a new and friendly face."
2000
The Carillon was recently recognized as one of the top 20 buildings of the 20th Century in the Richmond
Metropolitan area by a selection panel which included architectural historians, broadcast and print journalists,
and city and county officials.

Ballou Justice Upton Architects received a Community Architect's Award from the Sierra Club. The Chesapeake Bay Group
Award was for Outstanding Achievement in Design Using Smart Growth Principals.
February, 2000
Ballou Justice Upton Architects was recognized for architectural design excellence for the renewal of Dinwiddie Middle School.
This project won the award during the Virginia Educational Facility Planners conference.
The category was Middle School/High School Renovation.
November, 1999
Ballou Justice Upton Architects was recognized for educational design excellence for
Lucille M. Brown Middle School in Richmond, Virginia, in the
American School & University 1999 Architectural Portfolio. This was one of only three such citations
awarded nationally.
