Virginia Air National Guard Medical Facility
    Sandston, Virginia

    VANG Medical

Sited on the 192nd Tactical Fighter Group’s base at Byrd Airport, the Medical/Dining Facility is actually two buildings in one. Ballou Justice Upton Architects designed the buildings to fulfill the daily health maintenance and emergency life care needs of the base. The facility also features a well-organized, streamlined Food Preparation Area and Multi-Purpose Dining Room. The Dining Room contains built-in audiovisual equipment. The medical section of the building includes Administrative and Training Areas, Opthamalic and Audiometric Examination Rooms, Laboratories, X-ray Service and an Emergency Room.

Although the budget was ample for the project, the total square footage allowance was such that flow pattern and planning had to be designed to precision. The Medical Wing of the building is designed to serve a fully active 1,000-man plus group or it may be selectively closed down to accommodate a base operating with a minimal personnel complement. The Dining Service Wing is designed to handle as many as 1,000 men in four shifts per meal.
